Embarrassment is one of the facts of life that we must deal with. We all experience it at some point in our lives. But sometimes say if we have a condition that we do not want to discuss or feel like people will make fun of you if you do talk about it. A person might have symptoms or an illness that they might not want to discuss. It is something that they must overcome and if they do it will help in the long run. So what are some ways to dealing with embarrassment in front of doctors?
Having a bond with your physician is one way to go. If you have the same doctor every year, you already have a reputation with that particular doctor. Therefore it will be pretty easy to talk about your symptoms and what you are experiencing. If you do need to get a new doctor or physician, try to develop a relationship with them too. All doctors are there to help you and regardless of whatever symptoms you have, they have all heard it before. Your doctor will not get upset at you when you describe your symptoms.
If you looked up any symptoms online that is ok. However as you are describing them to the doctor, use your own words or explain the situation in a way that is easy to use. You do not have to talk like doctor to doctor and use so many fancy terms. If you are finding it uncomfortable to talk about the symptoms, discuss them aloud in privacy without anyone around you until you feel comfortable with saying them. Instead of thinking about it as practicing for a doctor’s appointment, pretend that you are preparing a speech like for a nice assembly or a family dinner. That way it would not bother you as much.
However if you still find yourself uncomfortable with talking about your symptoms with the doctor, write down everything you are feeling. You can write down the symptoms and any questions you may have on a piece of paper and hand it to your doctor with no problem at all. It is a start in the right direction and it can gradually make it easier for you to discuss symptoms with your actual voice for visits in the future.
So remember that the doctor is your friend. You can always talk to your doctor about anything and they are always there to help.
