Dealing With Caffeine Addiction

Aside from products like tobacco, alcohol, and illegal drugs which are being labelled as ‘addictive’ and regulated, caffeine is another substance that can produce an actual ‘addiction’. Caffeine can be considered one of the most addictive substances known to man that has its own side-effects, and can be used regardless of the quantity without worrying about legal complications.

Quitting caffeine takes much effort, so you should be prepared for how to deal with caffeine addiction and its withdrawal symptoms when you remove it from your system. With the stress of today’s lifestyle, it is easy for anyone to turn to caffeine for a quick boost. Caffeine is a psychoactive neurostimulant, which is why it gives us that push we need to get more work done, even after a tiring day. It may be considered as a stress buster and anti-depressant because it stimulates the body to release a “feel good” endorphin called Serotonin. This is also the reason why it becomes so addictive, as the body gets used to the increased serotonin levels. It is therefore very easy to wake yourself up for that extra workload or even a full night’s review for tomorrow’s exam; however, it can also give you those nasty dependence and side-effects. Sleep disorders, skin problems, twitching nerves and headaches are some of the side-effects of caffeine. In chronic addiction to caffeine, you can even develop hypertension or heart problems. When it is usually taken in very high amounts and suddenly stopped, it causes “caffeine poisoning” or caffeine withdrawal.

So how can you deal with caffeine addiction? First of all, you should determine if you are really addicted to caffeine or not? Here are some of the symptoms you might experience with caffeine addiction:

  • Cravings for caffeine during a specific time of day
  • Having a feeling of being uncomfortable if your caffeine is depleted
  • Irritability and restlessness when you have not taken caffeine for a long time
  • Headaches or sleeplessness without consuming caffeine

Quitting caffeine will take every effort from you. It’s not easy to do, especially if you are already a chronic consumer of caffeine. You will experience withdrawal symptoms, but at the end of the day, it is your determination to quit caffeine that will help you succeed. Here are some tips that can help you break free from your caffeine addiction:

  • Know that it is a gradual process and you cannot remove your addiction overnight. Keep in mind that it takes effort, time, and determination to be successful in breaking the habit that is caffeine.
  • Switching to drinks with lower caffeine content can help your body get used to the lower the levels of caffeine in your circulation. Try switching from coffee to tea and then gradually to something else with lower caffeine content until you can go without it.
  • Decaffeinated drinks can also help you satisfy you cravings for caffeine, but it is important to keep your eye on the goal of completely eliminating caffeine.
  • Social support can help! Even just getting your friends or family to keep reminding you that you are trying to quit is a very helpful way to achieve your goal.
  • Have a fit lifestyle. Exercise regularly to eliminate the caffeine and cleanse your body.
  • Have good sleeping habits. Sleep at regular times each night and avoid those late nights. At least seven hours of sleep at night is good enough to keep you refreshed and active for the day’s activities.

It is always hard to quit when you are already deeply immersed in a particular activity. Knowing how to deal with caffeine addiction will make things easier when it’s time for you to quit.
